Let your heart be light

This is one of my all-time favorite songs and one of my all-time favorite movies.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
sung by Judy Garland in Meet Me in St. Louis
The song was written for this movie and is as classic as classic can be.

Meet Me in St. Louis is a movie about friends and family, home and change.

Personally, change is something that I really struggle with and am continuously learning to accept and go through with faith. Family and friends and home are things that I hold dearly too, so the themes of this movie and this song really touch my heart in a million little ways.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas is such a popular holiday song and I feel like the meaning in it's lyrics are very overlooked. It's a song that means a lot to me in the Christmas season and actually crosses my mind all throughout the year.

The song talks about enjoying the holiday season and letting your heart be light. Some years Christmas comes at a difficult time for families and relationships in many different ways, whether it be economically, because of sickness, because of diagreements or miles between loved-ones. We all know that sometimes the holidays just aren't easy.

The song sings that next year all our toubles will be out of sight. A hopefull statement, it's often true and it's nice to think of although things may be tough right now, the next Christmas will be better- whatever is happening will be over and done with. That's a reason for our hearts to be light. It's something that can be applied all year 'round and something I remind myself of. Just enjoy where you are and the season you are in- keep on, keeping on and next year you'll be through whatever storm you're in.

It talks about faithful friends, which are something to celebrate, and how you'll all be together next year if the fates allow. Miles apart or together, next year you'll all be together again if it's in God's will. And if someone has passed away, believers can know that they will be together someday in heaven. That's a reason for a heart to be light too.

It's a song that means something different to me each year. Some years it makes me smile and some years it brings a tear. This year it does both. My family and myself have been so blessed with each other and our faithfull friends, among much more. However, this holiday season I know many people close to be going through so much hurt that can be especially difficult at Christmas time. Sometimes it is hard to sing "let your hearts be light", but that's the only way to muddle through to next year.

Lyrics:

Have yourself a merry little Christmas

Let your heart be light

Next year all our troubles will be out of sight

Have yourself a merry little Christmas

Make the yule-tide gay

Next year all our troubles will bemiles away

Once again as in olden days

Happy golden days of yore

Faithful friends who are dear to us

Will be near to us once more

Someday soon, we all will be together

If the Fates allow

Until then, we'll have to muddle through somehow

So have yourself a merry little Christmas now.
